VIERA -- One Senior Place's philosophy is "Be an informed consumer -- know your options and have a plan. It's better to have a plan than a crisis."

Sticking with its philosophy, One Senior Place will host "Senior Living Options Day" on Friday, Nov. 15 from noon until 4 p.m.

The large event, which is free and open to the public, will explore and compare the housing choices available to Brevard County seniors. More than a dozen assisted living facilities and senior living communities will be on-hand to provide information, schedule tours and participate in the "Senior Living Showcase" multimedia presentation.

"This is our eighth annual Senior Living Options Day, and it has become one of our most important events," said Kathi Ridner, director at One Senior Place. "Most retirees feel that they want to stay in their own homes until the day they die, and then, because of a change is circumstances -- death of a spouse, chronic, long-term or sudden illness -- they find that this is no longer possible."

Ms. Ridner and the staff at One Senior Place recognizes that making the decision to move into a senior living community or assisted living facility is one of the most important decisions seniors will make and want to make sure that they, as well as their families, have access to as much information as possible before doing so.

"Decisions of this magnitude are best made with the support of family members, keeping in mind that the ultimate decision will be made by the senior," Ms. Ridner said.

Assisted living facilities and senior living communities for the Nov. 15 event include The Fountains, Courtenay Springs Village, Viera Manor, Sonata at Melbourne, Palm Cottages, Grand Villa, Autumn House, Wuesthoff Town Square, Hibiscus Court, The Brennity at Melbourne, Victoria Landing and Brookdale Senior Living -- Southland Suites, Sterling House I & II, Clare Bridge and Sandpoint of Titusville.

One Senior Place is happy to host Ken Peach as the keynote speaker for "Senior Living Options Day." Mr. Peach is the executive director of the Health Council of East Central Florida, and will deliver a talk entitled "Florida Senior Living: a Bright Future."

Mr. Peach, who is considered a futurist, believes that the Baby Boomer generation will seek living options that match its active lifestyle; therefore, passive retirement is likely to be replaced by cycles of work, learning and sabbaticals, redefining the retirement as "life redesign" or "life restructuring."

Ms. Ridner said attendees will also have the opportunity to win some wonderful door prizes, with a special grand prize offered by Senior Partner In-Home Care -- a $250 VISA gift card.

There will also be a competition amongst many of the senior communities, as they compete for the honor of "Top Chef," providing tempting treats for the audience and judging panel. The category for this year's "Senior Living Options Day" is desserts. A judges panel of local heroes will determine the winner. Judges include Dr. Tom Howard, chief medical officer at the VA Clinic; Donald Hughes, Satellite Beach Fire Chief; and Lionel Cote, retired police chief and Brevard County Sheriff's Office reserve officer.

One Senior Place will host "Senior Living Options Day" on Friday, Nov. 15 from noon until 4 p.m. There is no cost to attend and the public is welcome.

One Senior Place is located at 8085 Spyglass Hill Road, Viera.
