DAYTONA BEACH - What most theater productions have in common is the fourth wall, an imaginary boundary that separates the audiences from the actors on stage.
Through improvisational comedy and audience participation, one local group is tearing down that fourth wall. The result is an interactive entertainment experience in which members of the audience see their ideas brought to life by talented performers.
Random Acts of Insanity is a Daytona-based improv troupe that is celebrating its one-year anniversary this week with four shows to benefit the Daytona Playhouse.
"Since we started, the public has been very receptive and supportive of our shows," said the group's founder, Hillary J. Walker. "For our birthday, we want to show our appreciation for the community that has made us successful."
The group hopes to raise $3,000 in proceeds for the playhouse, but Ms. Walker said that is not the only way the performers give back to the community.
"Each show is different because the audience's decisions shape the performance," she said. "We couldn't do what we do without them, and the best way we can show our appreciation for that is by making them laugh. That's more important than money."
Each Random Acts of Insanity show features several improvisational games and skits that rely on audience members to provide details such as character names, occupations, situations and locations.
"Our performers are from different places and different walks of life, and so is our audience," Ms. Walker said. "That helps add diversity to each show."
Troupe member Heather VanAntwerp said improvisational performances are unlike other theater productions.
"It's not just a show that you sit and watch," she said. "It's an entertainment experience that the audience gets to take home with them."
The Random Acts of Insanity benefit shows will be held at the Daytona Playhouse June 30, July 1, 7 and 8. Tickets are $10 for adults or $8 for anyone younger than 18.
Each performance will consist of two 40-minute sets, separated by a 10-minute intermission. Attending more than one performance, however, does not mean seeing the same show.
"Every show we do is unique because we never know what someone in the audience will suggest," said assistant director Tara Jenkins.
Random Acts of Insanity is also available for performances at private functions such as birthday parties, fundraisers and special events.
"We are a troupe for hire," Ms. Walker said. "And we take being funny very seriously."
