ST. LUCIE COUNTY -- The season for gathering together, giving thanks, lighting candles and trimming trees is close at hand.

In an effort to help local families enjoy holiday dinners together in their homes, Family Meals is hosting its 2013 Food Drive through Dec.6.

Tight budgets and concerns about job stability keep festive holiday meals out of reach for many hard-working St. Lucie County residents. In response to local economic challenges, Family Meals provides free, uncooked meal ingredients to help families prepare and enjoy bountiful holiday dinners together.

The nonprofit group encourages residents to develop a positive family routine of gathering around their tables - talking, laughing and enjoying each other's' company.

Family Meals volunteers started delivering holiday dinner ingredients to St. Lucie County families last Thanksgiving. Volunteers assisted 20 families in November, 2012.

The group's Christmas outreach helped 60 families, and 150 families were provided groceries for Easter dinners in March, 2013. Family Meals' Summer Outreach in July benefitted 341 families. Ingredients for 1,000 meals were provided, including dinners for 400 children.

Family Meals enormous growth in 2013 has depleted the organization's funds. Community help is needed. All food donate dwill off-set grocery expenses for Family Meals' upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas outreaches in November and December, 2013.

Rita Lindsey, Food Drive chairwoman, placed one drop-off location in Martin County, and donation bins throughout St. Lucie County. All donated, non-perishable canned and boxed food items will go directly to St. Lucie County homes for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Arrangements to donate frozen turkeys or gift cards for turkeys can also be made.
