PORT ST. LUCIE -- The Port St. Lucie City Council is urging all commercial businesses in the city to participate in the third annual citywide "Community Days" weekend sales event, designed to bring customers into local stores, restaurants and offices as the holiday shopping season approaches.

The event will take place Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Nov. 9-11. For those days, the city will waive any special event permit fees for any qualified business that registers to hold an event at its business location during the 2013 Community Days weekend.

Normally, special event permits cost hundreds of dollars and are required for sidewalk sales, tent sales and other heavily promoted events.

To be qualified, businesses must have a current city business tax receipt (formerly known as an occupational license) and must be in an area zoned for commercial use.

Because home-based businesses are in areas zoned residential, home-based businesses are not eligible to participate in this event, and their application will be rejected.

Stores, restaurants, and customer-oriented businesses such as insurance offices, real estate brokerages, medical offices and banks are encouraged to register online now for the event.

Those that participate are asked to provide something of promotional value, such as discounted prices, giveaway items or free snacks and drinks. There are no requirements specifying what the promotional offer should be.

Businesses that sign up will be included by name and location in a promotion on the city's website, where a searchable list of businesses will be made available to the public. It will include listings by business category (such as automotive, furniture, travel, etc.) and by business name. The website averages more than 85,000 visits a month.

The weekend sales event will also be promoted in the city's weekly electronic newsletter (which has more than 10,000 subscribers), on the city's cable channel (PSL-TV20), and in press releases to local news outlets.

As the only event of its kind on the Treasure Coast, the "Community Days" weekend sales event is intended to encourage residents to shop locally and to help businesses attract new customers.
