COCOA -- Are you looking for something new and fun to do with your family or special someone next Friday?
On Friday, Oct. 18, the Brevard Museum of Natural History and Science will host "Family Friday," a new, monthly event.
"Sept. 20 was our very first time hosting Family Fridays," said Rachel Burris, director of education and assistant director of the Brevard Museum. "We are hoping to be able to continue to do so for a long time."
The Brevard Museum, which normally closes at 4 p.m. on Fridays, is extending its hours and remaining open until 9 p.m. for Family Fridays. Last admission for Brevard Museum's Family Fridays is at 8 p.m.
"The Brevard Museum focuses on Florida history, from prehistoric to pioneer," Mrs. Burris said. "It features a one-of-a-kind exhibit, such as the Windover Archaeological Dig exhibit, displaying the dig, in which remains of humans from over 7,000 years ago were discovered."
The Brevard Museum of Natural History and Science also features exhibits about the different types of Florida industries, such as citrus, railway and turpentine, as well as displays depicting how the pioneers of Florida would have lived. There is an extensive shell collection and dioramas of Florida's ecosystem.
"The museum offers hands-on fossils and pottery pieces available for children of all ages in the By-Gone Beasts exhibit, which features iconic Ice Age animals, including a mastodon, giant ground sloth and saber tooth cat," Mrs. Burris added.
Promising to be a great time for everyone, Mrs. Burris encourages everyone to come out to the Brevard Museum's Family Friday's event.
"Family Friday is a unique way to spend time as a family or out on a date," she said. "It is an inexpensive evening, full of culture and local history, which many do not realize Florida is full of."
The Brevard Museum of Natural History and Science will host Family Friday on Friday, Oct. 18. Final admission is at 8 p.m.
Regular admission prices apply on Family Fridays. The cost for adults is $6 and children are $4.50, with discounts offered for seniors, students, active military and teachers.
The Brevard Museum of Natural History and Science is located at 2201 Michigan Ave., Cocoa.
