FORT PIERCE -- The Zora Neale Hurston Education Foundation will be recognizing community leaders and foundation committee members at its annual Zora Recognition Luncheon, kicking off the 2013-14 Zora Fest! activities.

Scheduled for Oct.26, the luncheon will be from noon - 2 p.m. at Granny's Kitchen, 901 Avenue D in Fort Pierce. Tickets for the event are $35 per person.

The recognition will include honoring friends of the Foundation and committee members who have coordinated Zora activities since the first Zora Fest! in 2005. Sponsors will also be honored.

Steven Knapp, Indian River State College professor, will be the guest speaker, discussing his research on the late Harlem Renaissance author, who spent her final years in Fort Pierce and is buried at Sarah's Memorial Garden cemetery. Mr. Knapp has written articles on Hurston and teaches about her literary and anthropological work in his classes.

Beginning in 2014, the Foundation will present Zora's Birthday Party on Jan. 4 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Hurston Library on Avenue D. Authors and student performers will be on hand for the program.

On Feb. 8, Zora friends don their best hats and head to the Fort Pierce Yacht Club for the annual Hattitude Luncheon, celebrating Zora's love of hats. A fashion show and student performances are part of the program. The event is 2 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person.

Zora Fest! is scheduled for Saturday, March 8 at Lincoln Park Academy on Avenue I in Fort Pierce. Authors, performers, music, and vendors are on hand for the annual event.

Friends of the St. Lucie Library distribute free books to local schoolchildren. The Foundation provides tours of the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail on the City of Fort Pierce trolley.

The festival is followed on Sunday, March 9 with the annual Authors Brunch. Books are for sale to be signed by the authors on hand. The event is $35 per person, with the location to be announced.

Reservations for the Oct. 26 luncheon can be made by calling (772) 971-1744.
