BREVARD -- In an effort to give back to its community, a local museum will open its doors for free this Saturday.

The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science will offer free admission on Saturday, Sept. 28, as part of Smithsonian Magazine's Museum Day Live!, a nationwide event. Visitors presenting a Museum Day Live! Ticket, which can be found on Smithsonian Magazine's website and is required for admission, will be able to explore one of Brevard's finest museums, free of charge.

"While this is Smithsonian Magazine's ninth year hosting Museum Day Live!, I believe that this is the Brevard Museum's first year participating," said Rachel Burris, director of education and assistant director of the museum. "We are very excited to do so."

Patrons can enjoy all of the wonderful exhibits that the Brevard Museum of Natural History and Science has to offer, with a special focus on "Bones," a fully articulated mastodon, that was recently unveiled at the museum, and the By-Gone Beasts exhibit.

Mrs. Burris added that volunteers will be available throughout the museum to answer any questions about the exhibits and to offer additional historical information.

Smithsonian Magazine began Museum Day Live! in 2004, in an effort to make learning and the spread of knowledge accessible to everyone, while giving museums throughout the country the opportunity to mimic the admission policy of the Smithsonian museum in Washington D.C.

Museum Day Live! 2012 drew in more than 400,000 participants, and Smithsonian Magazine expects to topple last year's staggering turnout.

"This is an important event for the Brevard Museum to be able to participate in on a national level, with other museums, in offering free admission," Mrs. Burris said. "We want people to learn about history and be excited to do so."

Mrs. Burris added that Brevard Museum offers the perfect way to combine learning with fun.

"People should attend to see the exhibits the Brevard Museum offers and learn about Florida history," Mrs. Burris said. "The museum focuses on Florida history, and much of it is local to Brevard County. We have Florida history from the prehistoric era to pioneer."

Museum Day Live! will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Brevard Museum of Natural History and Science. Admission is free, but a Museum Day Live! ticket is required for museum admission.

Tickets are available for download at www.smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors, who present the Museum Day Live! ticket, will gain free entrance for two at participating venues for one day only. One ticket is permitted per household, per email address.

The Brevard Museum of Natural History and Science is located at 2201 Michigan Ave., Cocoa.
