MARTIN COUNTY -- The sounds of swinging jazz, moody blues, and toe-tapping bluegrass will fill Martin County libraries from September to November as part of the Library's Journey Stories series.

The Martin County library system has teamed up with the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society to enrich the community and promote the music that is distinctly American in origin, the roots from which nearly every other musical style evolved.

"Roots music is where everything started," said Alicen Kikkert, Public Relations Manager for Martin County Libraries.

It's that music that the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society specialize in. Their goal is to introduce the community to these great American art forms that tie in perfectly with the themes of the Journey Stories series.

Exploring Americans' vast roots is what Journey Stories series is all about. Since April there have been culture lectures, film festivals and presentations all revolving around the stories of Americans' experiences of coming to and thriving in this country.

"Everyone has a story to tell," Ms. Kikkert said. "It brings us all together."

The concerts, especially, she noted, are a wonderful way of bringing together those of all ages and backgrounds from the community.

All the events, including the music series, are leading up to the Smithsonian travelling exhibit Museum on Main Street: Journey Stories that examine the diverse stories of immigration, innovation, and freedom of those all around the U.S.

And as music played a significant role in immigrants' journeys to and growth in America, library organizers thought a concert series involving the musical roots of Americans' ancestors would fit in nicely.

The hour-long concerts will be entertaining for music lovers of all ages and are scheduled at three different libraries in the county.

"I'll be attending all of them for sure," said Ms. Kikkert.

Jazz will launch the series at Hobe Sound Library on Sept. 7, Bluegrass will entertain on Oct. 5 at Robert Morgade Library in Stuart, and Blues will wrap up the series on Nov. 9 at Elizabeth Lahti Library in Indiantown. All concerts begin at 2:30 pm.
