Video game designed to attract tourism to the Space Coast

BREVARD -- The Space Coast has entered the realm of virtual reality through a new space-themed iPad app, available to more than 1 million people around the world.

Solar Flux HD is an iPad puzzle and strategy game tasking players to explore the universe in a virtual attempt to save dying stars, navigate gravitational fields and slingshot around planets, moons and solar flares became available on Aug. 15.

Bonnie King, director of sales for the Space Coast Office of Tourism/Film, said the Office of Tourism is partnering with independent game developer Firebrand Games and Kennedy Space Center to promote the iPad app.

"The game has a lot to do with the solar system, and we sell space," she said. "The game requires quick reactions, and you need a mind for strategy."

The game features 82 levels that Ms. King said consists of steering a space craft through the depths of space and challenges the player to save suns from gravitational pulls.

The Space Coast Office of Tourism hopes the game will attract tourists to the Space Coast.

Additionally, the Office of Tourism is currently filming an ad for the game with Kennedy Space Center, Ms. King said.

"We are creating a video that highlights the game," she said. "(The video will be) an astronaut playing the game to highlight the Space Coast."

After the video for the game is completed, Ms. King said the Office of Tourism and the Firebrand Games will also host a contest, where a selected gamer wins a trip to the Space Coast and a chance to design a new level for the game.

At the moment, Ms. King said it has not been decided how the winning gamer will be chosen, whether it be from achieving a high score in the game or applying online.

However, if the winner is chosen based upon a high score, Ms. King said it may allow someone, who really knows the game, a chance to design a new level.

"They would know the game inside and out," she said. "They would have great ideas to add."

Solar Flux HD is available for the iPad and can be found in the App Store.
