In response to: 'Pedal pushers annoying'

Perhaps a history lesson is in order.

Bicycles preceded automobiles. Roads were built for bicycles, believe it or not. If not for cyclists, there would not be improved roads allowing cars to hit the ground running once they were developed. Bicycles are considered vehicles and that is why we demand (and the law provides) equal rights for access and use.

It is true some cyclists give others a bad name. As a matter of fact, I recently gave a fellow cyclist a piece of my mind after watching him ride the wrong way down the left side of the road to pass a line of cars (that I was waiting in) on Flagler Avenue. I told him this type of behavior gives the rest of us a bad image.

But when you think about it, it's nothing that isn't perpetrated by motorists on a daily basis -- (lack of turn signals, rolling through stop signs, etc.) Not making excuses for cyclists that break the law, just showing it is an argument that goes both ways.

Finally, with regards to taxes and licensing -- you do realize the great majority of cyclists also drive cars, right? We pay taxes just as everyone else. Licensing is also cost prohibitive. I'm a competitive cyclist who also rides recreationally. I own six bicycles. Can you imagine what this might cost me? What about my four-year-old daughter? Should I have to pay for a license so she can ride 30 or 40 yards in each direction in front of our house? Not for nothing, but this has been discussed before at great length and there is a reason (actually several) that it is not done.

In response to: 'Pedal pushers annoying'

Does this writer who wrote complaining about bikes and feeling we need to be licensed honestly feel we need more government in our lives (to license every bicycle rider)?

Don't you realize that once you license them, they will then most likely need to be insured?

Please, is there not anything we can enjoy in this world and in the state of Florida that is not taxed? Taxes are already being paid for highways. Give us a break. We pay enough taxes already.

Show Old Glory some respect

There is a bar in the 900 block on North U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach with an American Flag flying that is deplorable. It is very faded and in shreds. I called the business several weeks ago and asked them to please remove the flag. So far it is still there, 24 hours a day with no light and in all kinds of weather. It is so sad to see such disrespect.

In response to: 'Dirty schools coming'

Not only are the schools grossly understaffed, but my son's school at one time had 12 custodians. And recently, before July 1, his school had seven custodians. He now has three full-time custodians and one part time. This is nothing but slave labor.

In response to: 'Dirty schools coming'

Maybe the school board, which voted to privatize the custodians, should visit a school and see how it is to clean more than 30 classrooms, a gym and cafeteria with less people.

It's tailgate time again

Some people believe tailgate time is everyday when they get into their car. I mean the ones who glue themselves to the back of your bumper. Not realizing it is against the law. If they do hit you, they are automatically at fault, no matter what the circumstance. So, I don't know what they think they are going to do by tailgating. Maybe they think their car is going to jump over yours.

Get rid of fleas

No more fleas, sprinkle a small amount of mule team borax around the house. A little goes a long way and lasts a long time. It is also good for your wash.

E-registers, please

To the people remodeling the Publix in Port Orange. Please put in electronic cash registers. The Publix on Nova and the dollar stores are the only ones I have to show my driver's license. Please replace registers with electronic ones. If you don't have the money, you don't cash the check.
