Your skin is the largest organ of the body, the most exposed and often the most neglected.
Dr. Jeffrey Heller has spent more than 20 years in Daytona Beach helping people maintain this organ by keeping it healthy and vital.
"One thing I say so many times is if you live in Florida the sun is everywhere not just at the beach, not just at the pool, not just while you are golfing," Dr. Heller said. "And it adds up. The damage from the sun isn't just last week; it's from 30 years ago."
Heller Dermatology offers a variety of services to keep skin healthy and looking its best. Dr. Heller stresses the importance of seeing a dermatologist at least once a year for a skin check.
"There are things that may look abnormal, but may be normal and then there are things that look normal that may not be," Dr. Heller said.
Living in a tropical area, sun exposure is unavoidable and skin cancer is a concern. The most vulnerable areas are the nose, eyes and ears. Dr. Heller treats his patients with MOHS surgery, which combines the removal of a tumor with immediate microscopic examination of the tumor and diseased tissue, removing the cancer layer by layer.
"We do it all in a controlled manner," Dr. Heller said. "We take off a small piece of skin and have a pathologist on the premises to check it immediately. We know right away if we got it all out so we don't have to go back and do the surgery a second time."
A trip to Heller Dermatology can also be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience with the help of his associate, licensed Esthetician Alexandra Tyre.
Ms. Tyre's section of the office is more like a spa with a wall waterfall screen, green plants, aromatherapy and soft lighting.
Using an O2 LED machine, Ms. Tyre provides a non-invasive light therapy for facial rejuvenation treatments. The non-surgical procedures improve the skin by treating the early signs of aging and sun damaged skin. Often referred to as lunchtime procedures, patients can look younger without surgery.
"The procedure is done in a short time and the patient can go back to normal activities immediately after with no effects," Dr. Heller said.
Ms. Tyre said her patients are all ages, but generally between 40 and 60 years old.
"The treatments are very specialized and very individual," Ms. Tyre said.
For those with more severe brown spots or rosacea, Dr. Heller uses IPL Photo Facial Rejuvenation. The procedure involves precise amounts of light energy through the skin's surface.
"This is the only thing I've found that consistently helps everyone," Dr. Heller said.
The procedure has been described as a gentle snapping feeling with limited discomfort, though patients can opt for a topical anesthesia.
"It is important to get the patient comfortable and we use an anesthetic if needed," Dr. Heller said.
"It shouldn't be painful. It should be enjoyable."
The entire office has a relaxed feel to it with a helpful and cheerful staff.
"We treat people like family," Dr. Heller said. "Word of mouth is important. We want patients to tell people because they had such a good experience."
