Bodybuilding, figure and bikini competitions: Treasure Coast Classic Bodybuilding, Figure and Bikini Competition will be held at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on Saturday, Aug. 24. Sanctioned by the National Physique Committee, the event is open to the public and will include approximately 50 competitors. Prejudging begins at 10 a.m., and the finals start at 6 p.m. Tickets for prejudging event are $15. The 6 p.m. evening show costs $30. A combination ticket for both events is $40. Also at the show will be 22 sponsors offering fitness-related clothing and nutritional items. On Sunday, Aug. 25, more than 70 people will compete in the Florida State Classic bodybuilding competition, also at the Civic Center. Lifters will compete for a shot at the prestigious national competition in Las Vegas. A team of lifters from the Humana Fitness Center at the Civic Center will represent Port St. Lucie. They will be led by Matt Levine, city Fitness Coordinator, who is a Mr. Olympia competitor and champion power lifter. The Port St. Lucie Civic Center address is 9221 S.E. Civic Center Place. IRSC Performing Arts Academy Open House: 4-6 p.m. Find out about instruction in music, art and dance for children and teens (3-17). Ocean Science Lecture: "What's My Name Again? How Better Taxonomy Can Aid in Understanding Harmful Algal Blooms," a lecture from Niclas Engene, Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce. Cyanobacteria seasonally form extensive blooms in the Indian River Lagoon and throughout Southern Florida. New ways to identify these bacteria may help predict their production of toxins and other chemical compounds, which are important steps for monitoring, predicting, or possibly controlling these potentially harmful blooms.
