BREVARD -- Children in fourth through 10th grade and who love to sing are invited to audition for the Brevard Children's Chorus.

Auditions will be hosted on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at Suntree United Methodist Church in Melbourne.

Founded in 2004, the Brevard Children's Chorus is a nonprofit, auditioned group of singers, who perform quality choral music. More advanced singers belong to the chorus's Youth Ensemble.

Membership is open to boys and girls, who are students in private, charter, public and home-schools.

"Last year, we had 25 students in the chorus," said Joani Slawson, director. "A 40-student chorus would be ideal, and there is no limit on the number of students who can audition."

The Brevard Children's Chorus performs in six to seven shows each year, with the group most recently performing in the Family Concert with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra at the King Center, a Viera holiday concert with the Indialantic Chamber Singers and a "flash mob" at the Melbourne Beach Public Library.

"The art of music-making is more than just singing notes," Ms. Slawson said. "Every week, we work on integrating basic music theory, sight-singing and music history in the rehearsals to help make the experience meaningful and fun."

The Brevard Children's Chorus and Youth Ensemble meet for rehearsals on Thursday evenings in the church LOFT.

"Children, who love to sing, will have to opportunity to share their gift throughout Brevard County and make music with other students, who share the same passion for singing," Ms. Slawson said.

Ms. Slawson added that, if a child cannot make the audition this weekend, the group will also host auditions in January 2014.

The Brevard Children's Chorus will host auditions for boys and girls, who are students in fourth through 10th grade, on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Auditions will be hosted at Suntree United Methodist Church in Melbourne from 9 a.m. to noon.

Suntree United Methodist Church is located at 7400 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne.
