Learn how to start a small farm

Learn how to establish and market a small farm during the "Innovative Farmers Workshop II" from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

Topics include growing to sell at farmers markets, commercial vegetable production, avitourism, microgreens, operating a home-based bakery or food-processing business, and pest control options for the commercial vegetable farm.

Registration is required. The $15 fee includes lunch. Make checks payable to the Volusia County Extension Fund and mail them to the Volusia County Extension, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand, FL 32724.

Democratic party honoring union leaders

The Volusia County Democratic Party will honor the achievements of union leaders Stacy Stepanovich, president of Volusia/Flagler AFL-CIO, and Andrew Spar, president of Volusia Teachers Organization, as the female and male Democrats of the Year at the upcoming Democratic Unity Gala on Aug. 24 at The Shores Resort and Spa in Daytona Beach Shores.

Individuals or organizations wishing to congratulate Ms. Stepanovich or Mr. Spar can pay $100 for an ad, which will be displayed during the gala. Tickets to the gala are $75, which includes dinner and the keynote address by former Gov. Charlie Crist.

A pre-gala VIP reception with Gov. Crist is $25. Tickets, ads and sponsorships can be purchased online at volusiademocraticparty.org or by mailing a check to "Volusia County Democratic Party," P.O. Box 771, DeLand FL 32721.

Low-cost pet clinic slated

There will be a low-cost pet shot clinic, sponsored by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rescue, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at 3 Sisters Ice Cream, 101 E.. Ohio Ave. Lake Helen.

Heartworm prevention and flea control products will be available for purchase. This is a cash only clinic. No appointment is needed. Proceed benefit abused and abandoned animals.

Spring into fall vegetable gardening

Learn how to prepare a yard for a bumper crop of broccoli, carrots, spinach and other cool-weather vegetables.

Joe Sewards, an urban and residential horticulturist with the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension, will offer tips and advice from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

Light refreshments will be served and fact sheets from the University of Florida will be available.

Peripheral Vascular Disease Seminar at Florida Hospital DeLand

Board certified interventional cardiologist Dr. Janak H. Bhavsar will host a seminar on Peripheral Vascular Disease from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Florida Hospital DeLand.

At this free event, Dr. Bhavsar will provide an update on symptoms and treatment approaches for PVD.

Breast Cancer support group planned

Florida Hospital DeLand will host a breast cancer support group at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. at the Florida Hospital Deland Cancer Institute, 680 Peachwood Drive in DeLand.

This group provides opportunities for emotional support as well as education about breast cancer related topics.

Volusia County's Human Services office will host a public meeting to provide information about services, identify gaps in service, and elect a community representative and alternate to serve on the Human Services Advisory Board.

Ag Center to host pile burner course Sept. 5

Learn how to burn piles legally, safely and efficiently during a certified pile burner course at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

The University of Florida/Volusia County Extension and Florida Forest Service will conduct the course from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5.

Topics will include fire weather, smoke management, planning and implementation, open burning regulations, safety and public relations. When the weather is dry, certified pile burners will receive priority for burn authorizations. They also will be allowed to burn up to two hours longer per day and get multiple-day authorizations.

The fee is $50. Space is limited, and registration is required by Aug. 30. Registration forms are available by visiting www.volusia.org/extension and clicking on "agriculture."
