Buy more property, Port Orange

I am with Port Orange Mayor Allen Green about purchasing new acreage for recreation.

I have been saying for some time that the property at Willow Run and Williamson Boulevard from Interstate 95 to Madeline Avenue needs to be purchased for a future sports complex. New Smyrna Beach has one. Why can't we? It could be done in sections.

The area at City Center is becoming outdated. Let's sell the old police station to Palmer College, float a bond and buy it before it's too late.

Bentleys on the beach

So, Daytona Beach wants to attract tourists that are more affluent. Seems like a no brainer. Who would want to go to the Hamptons or the French Riviera when then can drive their Bentley or Rolls Royce on the beach?

In response to: 'Who cares about the royal baby?'

Many people like and are interested in the royal family. Jubilees, weddings and births bring joy to many. So here is an English saying, don't get your knickers in a twist.

In response to: 'Who cares about the royal baby?'

I have just received your newspaper. I have lived in Florida for 30 years, but I am English and there are lots of others and we do care about our baby prince.

Think twice before you mock our royal family and their baby.

In response to: 'Who cares about the royal baby?'

I am sorry that you don't feel any excitement for the birth of a child. A lot of people in this country enjoy following the news of the royal birth.

With nothing but bad news coming out of America what is so wrong with looking towards England to find some good news? If your blood pressure gets up so much that you feel you must write a rant about it, then I suggest getting a different source of news. In the meantime try to understand that you are not the only person who reads or watches the news.

In response to ugly truth response

Murder as defined by Webster's New World Dictionary: The unlawful and malicious or premeditated killing of one human being by another. Also, any killing that is done while committing another felony, such as rape or robbery. Murderer is a person guilty or murder.

Protest 9 to 5

I wish to express my opinion about the current protest being held at the Florida State Capital by a certain group of people who are camped out at Gov. Rick Scott's office with the intention of staying as long as it takes to get the governor to change the Florida State Stand Your Ground Law.

As a taxpayer, I object to the fact thousands of taxpayer dollars are being used to support these protestors to occupy the capital building facilities 24/7.

At 5 p.m. and weekends, they should go home. Business is done. I strongly support the Stand Your Ground Law. I hope Gov. Scott does not change or repeal it. I hope others who believe as I do contact the governor's office to express their support and no money be paid for after hours protesting.

No innocent

I am tired of listening to people describe Trayvon Martin as an innocent boy who only went to the store to purchase a soft drink and Skittles.

In fact, he purchased Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail and Skittles. If you add a certain cough medicine to these two ingredients, you will have a substance called Lean. This drink is used by many of our young people for its cocaine-like affect. Trayvon Martin, according to his own postings on his Facebook page, made and used this drink. In fact his autopsy report showed liver damage that was consistent with the use of Lean.

This young man did not deserve to be killed, but he certainly contributed to his own demise.

Tase this

If George Zimmerman had had a taser, then that young boy would still be alive.

No banners, please

Every time you try to watch something, you have to watch the banner and logo. We all know what we are watching. Seems a little big of overkill.

What is wrong with this picture?

A white man kills a black man and everyone is upset. Now a black man kills a white woman. Who will be upset? Read the headlines. There won't be any.

Dan told the truth

The July 26 Land Lines Dan Smith wrote told the truth. I totally agree with Dan. I think he did a fantastic job. He didn't put anyone in jeopardy. It wasn't judging George Zimmerman or Trayvon Martin. If people have a problem with it, they need to read it again. Thanks Dan for doing such a good job. Don't let them get you down. Keep up the good work. We love you.

Kudos to Dan

Kudos to Dan Smith, he had the guts to say what a lot of us were afraid to.

If you say something about a black person, then you are a racist. I for one have had my fill. Do you not watch the news? Night after night, home invasions, car jackings, drive bys, Publix robberies, even taking gold chains from people's necks at gas stations.

Check it out and see how much of that is white related. The black teen gun crimes in Orlando are at a high. All I know is if someone is pounding my head into the sidewalk and trying to kill me, I will defend myself, too. Wake up America, it is time for us to start the National alliance of Angry White people. but they would say it's a hate group.

Dan right on the money

I want to comment about Dan Smith's July 26 column. He was right on the money. He told the truth and said it like it was. He writes a great column and I really enjoy reading it every week.

Dirty schools coming

On July 1 the Volusia County School Board voted to privatize the school custodians.

There were 450 custodians working before. I have talked to some of the remaining custodians. They are grossly understaffed.

We are going to miss having schools cleaned the way they should be.

Ormond Code Enforcement?

So, what is the point of having a code enforcement office, if they don't enforce the codes?

It was my understanding Ormond Beach residents can't park boats (among other recreational vehicles) in front of their homes. After my neighbor parked an old fishing/motor boat in front of his house, and it hadn't moved after a couple weeks, I called the code office on July 24. I was told after reporting it, they had to monitor it for 72 consecutive hours.

OK, fine, but when it was still there on July 31, I called back. I was told they had talked to the homeowner about it, and he said he was moving it. Well, it's Aug. 8 and the boat hasn't budged. How many times do I have to call, and how much longer will it be there?

Either you can or you can't park it in front of your house. I don't see why this is so hard to enforce.
