It's only been open three weeks and already it's the hottest new pampering parlor in town. No, it's not for people. It's for pooches. Yes, dogs, our faithful furry canine companions whom we adore and, just like humans, deserve a little "sprucing up" every now and then.
On West Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach, the Amazing Dog Salon -- a hydro-spa, boutique and bakery for dogs -- offers the doggie population the best in grooming, skin treatments and gourmet treats. Owner-operator Donna Druckman knows the business well.
Starting out as a trainer of the elegant Chinese Crested breed, Ms. Druckman later became a master trainer of other breeds as well. Her experience includes obedience training, dog psychology and the rehabilitation of rescued dogs. She is a strong advocate of restoring the physical and emotional health of abused dogs. As often as possible, Ms. Druckman also participates in American Kennel Club-regulated obedience competition shows.
With 26 years in official dog training, and as a certified specialist in dog grooming, Ms. Druckman has put together the perfect environment for a variety of spa-treatment programs.
"It starts at the grooming table where the dog learns a positive atmosphere," she said. "We do what we can to make it pleasant for the animal."
"Our name speaks for itself. Come see why and see what it does," Ms. Druckman said.
At the Amazing Dog Salon, grooming procedures far exceed what is typically found in some salons. To begin, the staff of groomers must be certified, plus they must maintain their certification. Another criterion is experience, especially in the types of services offered at the "Amazing Salon."
Situated behind a large plate glass window, the spacious, well-lighted grooming parlor allows an open view to the procedures taking place. Furnishings include two "beauty mirrors," each illuminated with soft-white bulbs, plus two state-of-the-art grooming tables and several stainless steel cages.
But the Amazing Dog Salon is not just a grooming place. It's also a hydro-massage "spa" specializing in bathing and beautifying the four-legged customers. With hydro-massage, products (for the skin) are dispensed through a nozzle that blasts dead cells, bad bacteria and fleas from the skin. At the same time, it pulsates, leaving Fido's skin cleaner and healthier. Also included is ear cleaning and nail trimming. Every pet is hand-dried and fluffed, from beginning to end, and charmed with music.
Other services include tooth-brushing, hot oil treatments, intensive skin treatments and "hair-cuts," any or all of which can be included in a customized spa package. Among some of the more elaborate extras are "creative coloring," which uses a safe non-permanent, non-toxic dye that, for some, can add a little fun color to the coat. The salon also provides free consultations in both grooming and training.
Then there's the salon itself, which is patterned after a beauty salon. Except for its custom-decor, the store's interior looks much like a salon for people -- a reception desk, comfortable seating and a number of retail items ready for purchase. The only difference is that instead of the usual display of shampoos and conditioners, the salon has attractive glass cases filled with doggie treats.
The array of unique, hard-to-find treats at Amazing Dog Salon is, well, amazing.
The selection of goodies resembles a bakery -- mouth-watering and artfully arranged. Each is baked in a base of carob, yogurt or peanut butter, and/or chicken, beef or bacon; and all are low-cal, low sugar, wheat-free and corn-free. The quality is top-of-the-line.
With a seemingly endless variety of colors, shapes, sizes and themes, there's bound to be a treat for any pooch. How about some baseball or football cookies? Or a lobster? There also are bears, squirrels, pelicans, martinis and watermelon, not to mention decadent-looking brownies and cannolis. For dogs that can't resist junk food, there's a hamburger and fries combo. When it comes to beverages, perhaps a six-pack will do -- Bowser Beer for Dogs. It's non-alcoholic and comes in two flavors -- Beefy Brown Ale and Cock-a-Doodle Brew. The label says it all: "Put Some Party in Your Animal." Don't forget Fido's special day -- the salon also carries birthday "bones" and cakes."
"What we want people to know is that we are raising the bar on grooming standards (and) we stand with our products -- no compromising, ever," Ms. Druckman said. "This is an upscale salon -- with competitive everyday low pricing. Experience the difference!"
