Learn about near shore fishing

The Halifax Sport Fishing Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Riverside Pavilion, 3431 S. Ridgewood Ave., Port Orange.

Featured speaker will be Kemp Littlefield. He will speak about near shore fishing.

Near shore could be defined as within sight of land, easily reachable for almost any size boat, depending on water conditions.

Mr. Littlefield is a member of the board of directors of the Halifax Sport Fishing Club and serves as the publicity director.

Fishing near shore, offshore and inshore waters since 1989, Mr. Littlefield and his wife Barbara moved to Daytona Beach Shores permanently in 2009.

Mr. Littlefield's success resulted in his being named 2011 and 2012 Halifax Sport Fishing Club Angler of the Year.

The club's third annual Daytona Slam is Aug. 17 and the seminar can help anglers' planning for the event.

The species for the Slam are kingfish, barracuda and bonito, better known as the "Trashcan Slam."

This year's tournament is limited to fishing the Volusia County Artificial Reefs and a highlight of this program will be a review of those sights using the club's reef chart. The chart will also be on sale at the meeting.

Mr. Littlefield will address the tournament species as well as boat types, weather, safety, electronics, anchoring, problems, rigs, trolling vs. bottom fishing, and various baits.

All club seminars are free and open to the public.
