BREVARD -- The Brevard dating scene now has a new online option for residents to meet their ideal mates in a safe and trusting way.

CHECKEDmates is a new dating site, targeting the Central Florida area, which has partnered with one of the largest national background screening companies to verify user identities and filter out felons and sex offenders.

Ted Parker, founder and CEO of CHECKEDmates, said in a press release that the idea for the site was created due to an increased need for safety in online dating because of violent crimes associated with Internet dating.

"Meeting with a stranger from the Internet can be a scary prospect, (so) we're taking some of the uncertainty out of the process," he said. "We're bringing increased value to members by providing them with a sense of security."

Ron Vatalaro, marketing coordinator for the site, agreed that the online dating service is a unique concept within the online dating world.

"This site is unique because many people are not aware (that more than) 50 percent of people are not real who use dating sites," he said. "They are either made up profiles by the site developers or individuals, who use false identities for negative reasons. Our site is the only site that first verifies the individual is real then takes that information and runs a national criminal to screen to help ensure the individual does not have a felony or a sexual assault."

Mr. Vatalaro said the site took over a year to develop.

"The site was developed with not only safety in mind but with a cutting edge, user friendly environment," he said. "Our lead development team consists of some of the leading developers in the country, who have been involved with multiple large online projects."

Currently, Mr. Parker said the site is mainly targeted toward the Central Florida area, but the site is still expanding to eventually allow a national access to registry.

To become a member of the site, Mr. Vatalaro said pricing varies depending on membership.

For one-month's service, members pay $24.95 a month; for three-month's service, members pay $19.99 a month; for six months, members pay $18.32 a month; and, for a year's service, member's pay $16.66 a month.

Mr. Vatalaro said the site will refund a user's payment within the first 10 days of registering if they are dissatisfied.
