ST. LUCIE COUNTY -- United Way of St. Lucie County needs volunteers for the annual "Stuff the Bus" event. All St. Lucie County Wal-Marts will have buses to stuff with new school supplies on July 19 from noon to 8 p.m. and July 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Volunteers are needed both days to assist with collecting the school supplies. Adults and children of all ages can volunteer in two-hour shifts. This is an excellent opportunity for high school students to fulfill their community service requirements for graduation.
The volunteers stationed at the Wal-Mart stores will collect supplies purchased by customers who are shopping on that Friday and Saturday. The community is extremely generous with their donations to this project. St. Lucie County is known for coming together and helping people, especially children, according to Cris Adams, vice president of Community Impact for United Way, and committee chair for this project.
Since 2008 the Stuff the Bus event has raised more than $8800 in cash and 33,000 school supply items ranging from pens and pencils to back packs. All supplies go directly to the children in St. Lucie County Schools and the cash donations are used to purchase additional supplies.
School supplies are distributed by individual St. Lucie County schools based on need. The student must qualify for free lunch and be recommended by their school to receive the backpacks and supplies.
School supplies are being collected throughout the month of July and can be dropped off at any St. Lucie County Seacoast National Bank, PNC or at the United Way office located at 4800 South U.S. Highway 1 in Fort Pierce. To sign up for "stuff the Bus" shifts, call the United Way at 772-464-5300.
