Local art workshop for Brevard art teachers seeking donations for supplies

VIERA -- To reward local teachers for their hard work year-round, a local artist has a plan to show his appreciation.

"I think they get the short end of the stick a lot times," said Derek Gores, a local collage artist and owner of Eau Gallie Arts District ArtLAB. "This will be a lot of fun and a way to just give something back (to them)."

On July 15-16, Mr. Gores will host a two-day workshop for Brevard County Public School art teachers at the studio in the Eau Gallie Arts District in Melbourne.

The event will feature approximately 50 art teachers from around Brevard County and will deal primarily with collage artwork.

"This will teach (them) how to loosen up their art," he said.

While Mr. Gores said he has hosted numerous art workshops for more than five years, this is the first time he will host a workshop dedicated entirely to teachers.

Also, to provide the full experience for the teachers, Mr. Gores said a professional art show will be held at the EGAD ArtLAB for the public at a date in August.

Mr. Gores said he is also seeking donations to cover the purchase of professional supplies for the teachers.

He said he hopes to collect $6,000 to cover all expenses.

Brevard Schools Foundation will manage all of the funding and will accept tax-deductible donations through its offices.

If businesses or individuals wish to send checks for donations, Mr. Gores said they should make them payable to Brevard Schools Foundation, c/o Brevard Schools Foundation, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, FL 32940-6601.

Account No. 8800 should also be written in the reference line, he said.

Mr. Gores said that donors may also pay by credit card by calling (321) 633-100, Ext. 436, for Cathy Furtado, or Ext. 756, for Linda Filippini.
