Historian to discuss Florida pirates at DeBary Hall July 6

Quit smoking class offered
A six-week quit smoking class is being offered at 5:30 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday from July 16 to Aug. 20, at
Florida Hospital DeLand, Conference Room 1, 701 W. Plymouth Ave., DeLand.
The class is free and includes a workbook,
stress ball, water bottle, quit kit and four free weeks of nicotine replacement therapy (patch, lozenge or gum).

Cultural Council to review grant applications July 10
The Cultural Council of Volusia County will conduct a special meeting to review applications for the fiscal year 2013-2014 Community Cultural Grant program. The meeting will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the third-floor meeting room of the Volusia County Lifeguard Headquarters and Administration Center, 515 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach. The meeting is open to the public.
Thirty nonprofit organizations will present their applications for funding. Each organization will be given a brief opportunity to update Cultural Council members about their programs and respond to members' questions. Applications will be reviewed in alphabetical order.
Grant scores will be announced, but recommended award amounts will be determined after the county's budgeting process is completed. Final approval rests with the County Council. Funding for this grant program comes from the Volusia County Government's general fund allocation for cultural and heritage programs.

Animal Control Advisory Board to meet July 10
Volusia County's Animal Control Advisory Board will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, in conference room 159 of the Emergency Operations and Sheriff's Communications Center, 3825 Tiger Bay Road, Daytona Beach.
Sergio Pacheco, interim director of Animal Control Services, will provide a division update and introduce Deputy Director of Public Protection Terry Sanders and new board member Diane Ferguson.

Florida Hospital DeLand is seeking volunteers. Shifts are available on various days and for different lengths of time.
This is an opportunity to provide services, such as assisting patients at discharge or delivering flowers to patient rooms. No previous experience is necessary; the hospital offers an orientation program to familiarize volunteers with hospital policies, needs and goals.

Learn about bugs, butterflies and rain barrels during free hikes and classes at Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC) in July. Upcoming programs include:
Family picnic and hike: 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6. Pack a snack and join the LEC staff on a hike to the Lyonia Preserve pavilion. Participants will learn about scrub animals and plants along the way.
Central Florida's butterflies: 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13. Naturalist Chuck Tague will lead a trek into Lyonia Preserve in search of the gentle creatures that add beauty to our gardens and pollinate our plants.

Program to Help Kids Get Their 'Fill of Food and Fun'
To ensure that fewer kids and teens go hungry this summer, the Volusia Flagler
Family YMCA is offering a free Summer Food Program, thanks to a $5 million grant from the Walmart Foundation.
The Volusia Flagler Y's Summer Food Program is part of a national partnership between YMCA of the USA and the Walmart Foundation to address child hunger.
The program is available to all children now through Aug.16 from 9 to 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the DeLand Family YMCA, 761 E. International Speedway Blvd. and from 7 to 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Iglesia Bautista Emanuel, 1310 Red Fox Run, Deltona.
