MERRITT ISLAND - As a young man, Dr. Sheldon Hoxie's fascination with chiropractics began earlier.

"My story starts back in high school," he said. "I dislocated my shoulder in martial arts, and my instructor put it back into place."

Dr. Hoxie said he then paid a chiropractor a visit following his instructor's impromptu healing session. At the meeting, Dr. Hoxie, who was considering going to medical school at the time, said he had an epiphany.

"I asked the chiropractor how many of his patients have died," he said. "He told me that all of his patients die eventually, but none of them die, while on his watch."

From that moment onward, Dr. Hoxie set out to study the human body and find a holistic approach for wellness.

Dr. Hoxie offers a cure for general aches and pains, back injuries, headaches, stomach problems and other internal ailments.

If a patient can be cured without pharmaceutics, Dr. Hoxie said he will find a way.

Patients of Dr. Hoxie also receive well-rounded care, as the doctor has spent most of his professional life obtaining various degrees and further expanding his knowledge of his craft, he said.

Dr. Hoxie is also currently working toward his M.D., which means he will be able to understand other ailments and problems beyond the expertise of an average chiropractor to give his patients a whole-body experience.

Once the problem has been found, Dr. Hoxie said he works to fix the problem, as well as recommend a change in lifestyle to best heal the patient.

Dr. Sheldon Hoxie's Spine and Injury Center is located at 1175 N. Courtenay Parkway on Merritt Island. Office hours are Monday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
