Commissioner of Education Tony Bennett recently honored International Speedway Corp. of Daytona Beach as an exemplary school partner.
The Commissioner's Business Recognition Awards reception was at the Grand Hyatt in Tampa on June 13.
For the past 26 years, the event has celebrated innovative partnerships between Florida businesses/organizations and public schools.
Volusia's recipients were selected from 39 partners-of-the-year nominations submitted by schools to a district committee.
ISC has a long partnership history with Volusia County Schools. In 1992, the company developed Winner's Circle-Victory Lane to encourage at-risk high school students to stay focused on school. ISC provides events at Daytona International Speedway, motivational speakers, job tours and a race day field trip. More than 1,500 students have benefited from the program since its inception.
ISC has been a major sponsor of the Sports Science Academy at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. It provides the academy hands-on events, tours, field trips and career speakers. In 2005, ISC and the Speedway initiated Racing to Read, an incentive program that provides race tickets to encourage students to practice reading at home. Since 2005, more than 35,000 tickets, valued at more than $1 million have been made available to students.
First United Methodist Church of Port Orange was also named an exemplary school partner.
