NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Suds-N-Subs Delicatessen is not your average sandwich shop. With more than 25 years in the food service industry, owner Cathy Steindecker takes that extra effort to ensure the food she serves is fresh and tasty.

On 409 Mary Ave. at the corner of U.S. 1 just three blocks north of Canal Street, the eatery offers a variety of subs, wraps, soups and salads in addition to several dinner entrees and a large breakfast menu.

Suds N Subs is a hidden gem in the food industry in New Smyrna Beach with their gourmet New York Style Italian meals. Ms. Steindecker along with her fiancé, Mike Pomeroy, who also helps prepare the food, grew up in family-owned restaurants and catering businesses on Long Island.

"My father opened Adriana Delicatessen on Third Avenue in Brooklyn in 1973 and then moved to Silver Caterers Co. in the Nassau City area of Long Island," Ms. Steindecker said. "As a little girl I ran around in the place all day long. My father is the one who taught me and my twin sister how to cook."

Proof it runs in the family: Ms. Steindecker's twin sister, Fran Klier, owner of Catering Creations, was selected as a contestant on Hell's Kitchen Season 7.

They moved to New Smyrna Beach four years ago to follow their dream of running a deli. Mr. Pomeroy also owns a contracting business, B&P Contracting, and saw potential in the little shop on Mary Avenue.

"Everything inside the building was 30 years old and looked like it," Ms. Steindecker said.

The pair ripped out everything and completely remodeled the interior themselves, adding a deli counter to display their Boar's Head meats and cheeses and a sport's bar in the back.

Suds-N-Subs also has a side room for additional private seating for large groups and patio seating in the back of the building. With new tables and chairs, new counters and new appliances in the kitchen the shop is clean, cheery and inviting.

In addition to serving great tasting fresh food inside the restaurant, Ms. Steindecker also delivers all over New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater, including the beachside and even out onto the sand to those sunning on the beach.

"They have to pre-pay by credit card for those deliveries to the actual beach," Ms. Steindeckler said. "But if they order something from someone else and it's on my way I will stop and pick it up for them for a dollar."

Customer satisfaction is her top priority and she goes out of her way to ensure her customers are happy. Every day she shops for fresh vegetables and other ingredients and buys the best quality meats for her sandwiches and entrees.

The popular lasagna entrée that sells for only $10.95 includes a soup or salad, fresh sautéed vegetables, choice of potato and a dessert. This dish is exquisite with its sweet tomato sauce, homemade meatballs and pasta and gourmet mozzarella cheese. The New York Giant is a 14-inch black angus, all beef hotdog for only $5.96.

The Little Luigi wrap for $7.50 contains Genoa salami, Ham Cappy, pepperoni, sopressata and provolone cheese with fresh lettuce and tomatoes on a tomato basil wrap.

Suds-N-Subs offers specialty sandwiches, burgers and dogs, fresh cold cuts, wraps and Italian Ciabotlas ranging in price from $5 to $8. They also are open for breakfast and serve omelets, pancakes, grits and breakfast sandwiches, which are available any time during the day. All of their sub rolls, Kaiser rolls and Ciabotlas are baked fresh in the store every day.

They are open for breakfast, which is served any time during the day.

"We don't close at 2 pm!" Ms. Steindeckler exclaimed.

Previously the building housed a breakfast shop that was only open until 2.

On the 'suds' side of the business, the shop offers a variety of bottled beer. They are working on installing a keg system and plan to have draft beer on tap once that is complete.

The bar has seating for six and a TV to watch sports events. On Friday evenings they have "the Voice of Volusia County", Tommy Brown, singing live every week. Mr. Brown is a well-known local musician. Suds-N-Subs also offers catering for wedding receptions and other special events.

Suds-N-Subs is at 409 Mary Avenue, New Smyrna Beach. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Saturday. Call (386) 402-4987, visit suds-and-subs.com or email sudsandsubs@yahoo.com.
