BREVARD -- A wet and wildly fun poker run will take place this weekend, all for an excellent cause.
On Sunday, June 23, Route 1 Motorsports in Grant is hosting the Summer Kickoff Island Hop and Poker Run to benefit Promise in Brevard. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with the run beginning at 11 a.m. All proceeds will go to Promise in Brevard, which is a safe, enjoyable and affordable housing concept in West Melbourne, where individuals with and without special needs can live, work and thrive.
Event sponsors include Treasure Coast Marina, Glover Oil, Boaters Exchange, Sea Tow Sebastian and Malabar Mo's Bar and Grill.
"This is not our first poker run on water," said Kellie Wright, owner of Route 1 Motorsports. "But it's our first island hop to benefit Promise in Brevard. Participants can come by boat or personal watercraft."
Hosting an event to benefit Promise in Brevard means a great deal to Ms. Wright.
"As a mother of an autistic child, and a business owner, I want to raise as much awareness as possible to show how important this project is," Ms. Wright said. "The more community participation we get, the better the chances are for Promise to get the grants it needs to build this much-needed place for our kids to live and be independent."
Ms. Wright said that participants will be able to drop in their boats at the two boat ramps on both sides of the start and stop point of the run.
Maps and itineraries will be distributed prior to the start of the poker run. Participants will "hop" to four different islands and a restaurant on the water, where they will collect a colored chip for their poker hand.
"We will also include a treasure hunt throughout the run," Ms. Wright added.
"We would like to remind everyone that this is not a race and to take their time and enjoy the day," Ms. Wright said.
After visiting all five stops, participants will meet at the Treasure Coast Marina and The Old Fish House in Grant. Participants must show all five colored chips to then draw their poker hand.
"We would like all participants to be back by 2 p.m., which is when the pig roast will start," Ms. Wright added. "We will have a DJ from 2-4 p.m. and live music starting at 4 p.m."
A 50/50 raffle, as well as a silent auction, will take place following the poker run. Prizes include theme park tickets and hotel stays.
Those who participate in the poker run should hope for the hand of a lifetime, as the rewards are great.
"The winner of the poker run will receive a Sea-Doo towable, along with a gift certificate from Route 1 Motorsports," Ms. Wright said.
"This event is a unique way to kick off the summer, and for boaters to get out on the water and meet new people, all for a great cause," Ms. Wright said. "Anything Route 1 Motorsports can do to raise awareness and have fun at the same time is a win-win for everyone!"
