BREVARD -- To help medical students further their education, a local thrift store is in need of community support to achieve its goal of raising $100,000 for local scholarships.
"Our main goal is to fund scholarships for students, who volunteer at Wuesthoff Hospital or have family members, who work for the hospital," said Penny Colclesser, second vice president of the Board of Directors for the Wuestoff Auxiliary Thrift Store in Rockledge. "We hope to achieve $100,000 in five years, which is a big goal. We know other thrift stores do it, and we have enough volunteers and employees to keep our prices down and our profits inching up."
Opened last year, the Wuesthoff Auxiliary Thrift Store is a nonprofit organization, located in the Rockledge Square Shopping Center on U.S. 1 in Rockledge.
At the store, Ms. Colclesser said one-third of all proceeds go toward scholarships for medical students twice a year, such as young doctors and nurse technicians.
Each scholarship averages about $1,000, she said.
"The scholarships are medical scholarships that may only be something like $500 a semester," she said. "It's a little help."
The store accepts monetary donations from the public, as well as old furniture, appliances and clothing.
Ms. Colclesser said the store is considered to be a very high-end store for those who are in need of used clothing and furniture. Also, volunteers and employees of the thrift store will donate clothing and furniture to those in the hospital who are without, she said.
"We will give someone a recliner if they don't have anything to sit on at home," she said. "We also do free pick-up, from anyone in the community, who has furniture they want to donate but can't bring it to us."
The Wuestoff Auxiliary Thrift Store is located at 1846 U.S. Highway 1 in Rockledge and is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and Noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
