Summer enrollment open for medically fragile, complex children

MARTIN COUNTY -- Summer programs are nearly non-existent for special needs children with complex and fragile medical needs.

As the school year winds down, many parents stress over what to do with their medically fragile child during the summer months in order for the child to continue to receive the care he or she needs while they go to work or school. Now parents have a new option -- Martin County Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care.

Martin County PPEC is a medical daycare center for special-needs children, newborn to 20 years of age, with complex and fragile medical, developmental and technology dependent needs serving Martin and St. Lucie counties.

"It's unfortunate, but there aren't many care options for medically fragile children in the Treasure Coast," said Evelyn Duah, administrator of Martin County PPEC. "Here at Martin County PPEC, these special needs children receive the medical care they need and continued education while having fun in a safe and loving environment."

The facility is open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children through 20 years of age receive care by skilled pediatric nurses along with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and respiratory therapists.

Children enrolled in the program enjoy the opportunity to make new friends, learn, and participate in a variety of fun activities including music, art, field trips, the playground and more. Breakfast, lunch and two snacks are provided. Bus transportation is available for children who qualify.

"The Martin County PPEC program operates year long," said Ms. Duah. "But parents who send their child to regular local schools have the option to enroll in the program and send their child to the facility only during the summer months, school holidays or breaks. Parents have care options."

Martin County PPEC is located at 310 S.W. Ocean Blvd. in Stuart. For more information, call (772) 288-6466 or visit www.MartinCountyPPEC.com.
