Brooke VanDerLind, 17, of Merritt Island, spent her first Friday of summer vacation volunteering at the Central Brevard Humane Society on Cox Road in Cocoa. Her volunteering is usually limited to weekends, but has added weekdays to her schedule. The dogs are walked three to four times daily, no matter how many volunteers show up for duty. Brooke is walking Luna, a 4-year-old female Labrador retriever and German Shepherd mix. The two are walking Ella's Walk, a trail dedicated to the memory of Ella, a 1-year-old German Shepherd who died due to cruelty.
