Patriotic ball game planned
An evening of patriotism at the ballgame will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Melching Field at Conrad Park, 555 S. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.
The DeLand Suns will play the Leesburg Lightning.
Free flags will be given to the first 250 through the door. The DeLand High School Air Force ROTC honor guard will be there. There will be a salute to veterans and a children's flag honoring ceremony. The opening pitch will be by State Rep. David Santiago.
Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at Mail & Stuff in the Lowe's Shopping Center in DeLand or online at www.floridaleague.com.
A portion of the ticket sales goes to the Republican Club of West Volusia.

Community Assistance plans public meetings
Volusia County's Community Assistance Division will conduct a public meeting to provide information about the Community Development Block Grant, HOME Investment Partnerships and Emergency Solutions Grant programs.
The meetings will be at
5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Chisholm Community Center, 520 S. Clara Ave., DeLand.
Staff will provide information on the programs' status and discuss current funding levels and proposed activities for the 2013/2014 program year. Residents are encouraged to attend and provide input on housing and community development needs.

JAG funds available for nonprofits and cities
Volusia County anticipates the award of an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Countywide from the state Department of Law Enforcement in the amount of $164,626, of which the county will retain $16,462 for planning, evaluation and administration.
The amount available for countywide distribution is $148,164. Applications are being accepted.
Eligible programs include law enforcement programs; prosecution and court programs; prevention and education programs; corrections and community corrections programs; drug treatment programs; crime victim and witness programs; and planning, evaluation and technology improvement programs.
Final approval for funding will be made by the Volusia County Council.

Korean War Veterans to meet
The Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 189 will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the VFW 3282 Post at 5800 S. Williamson Blvd. in Port Orange.
Deborah Beckwith, spokeswoman for The William Chappell VA Outpatient Clinic will present a program of Benefits for Korean Veterans.
Anyone who has questions or concerns should attend this meeting. Further planning for the upcoming museum display project will follow the discussion and instruction session.

West Volusia Community Partnership "Caring through Sharing" will host Access West Volusia from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 21, at the Chisholm Center, 520 S. Clara Ave., DeLand.

Ag Center to host tree workshop for kids June 26
Volusia County 4-H will present "Wood you like to learn about trees?" for children ages 8 to 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the Agriculture Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.
Hillary Bennetts, a University of Florida student in natural resource conservation, will teach students about Florida ecosystems, tree identification, the life cycle of trees, and benefits of fire.
Children do not have to be 4-H members to attend. The cost is $10. Registration is required by June 14 and may be made by calling the University of Florida Volusia County Extension at (386) 822-5778.
Cancer support group offered
Florida Hospital DeLand will host a cancer support group at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 19 , at the Florida Hospital Deland Cancer Institute at 680 Peachwood Drive in DeLand.
The meeting will focus on nutrition during and after treatment.

Family housing units set to open in June; household items needed
The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia has been renovating a four-unit apartment home at 114 W. Walts Ave. in DeLand since late 2012 with the help of individual and business financial contributions, as well as free and reduced-cost work from more than a dozen local contractors.
Near move-in status, the four apartments are planned to open as emergency housing for homeless families with children in June.
Furniture and household goods are needed to make the renovated spaces livable. Neighborhood Center staff and volunteers are requesting donations of:
Bunk beds, twin beds, double beds and sofa beds
Sofas and armchairs
Kitchen tables and chairs
End tables, table lamps and floor lamps
Waste baskets and garbage pails
Dining room tables and chairs
Twin and double bed sheets, bed pillows and pillow cases
Bath, hand and dish towels
Blankets and spreads
Dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, cups/saucers, glasses and pots/pans
Table cloths, placemats and curtains
Plastic storage containers
Toasters and microwaves
To earmark donations for The Heart House, contact The Neighborhood Center's Thrift Shoppe at (386) 734-6006. Large items can be picked up. Surplus donations will be sold in the Thrift Shoppe to benefit The Neighborhood Center's programs.
Monetary donations also are welcome, and can be used to purchase the items listed above.

Volusia County's Pet Vet Cruiser offers low-cost spaying and neutering services to cats and dogs that belong to residents of unincorporated areas and the cities of DeLand and South Daytona.
