FORT PIERCE -- Wallace Sample served as the mayor of Fort Pierce from 1953 to 1954.
In that small amount of time, he was instrumental in the creation of a waterfront park known today as Fort Pierce Indian River Memorial Park.
To honor him and his accomplishments, the city recognized Mayor Sample with a memorial ceremony on May 15 at Veterans Memorial Park on Indian River Drive.
During the ceremony, a stone monument and bronze plaque was unveiled. The art, now standing along the waterfront walkway, was funded by the Fort Pierce's Art in Public Places.
According to Anne Satterlee, Fort Pierce communication manager, Mayor Sample graduated from the University of Florida law school in 1937 and was an attorney until 1959, including serving as city attorney. He was a municipal court judge and served as circuit court judge from 1959 to 1979.
Mayor Sample died in 1991 in Bradenton.
