Staff report

A swimmer went missing on Friday evening, May 31, off South Beach in Vero Beach and is now presumed dead.

Authorities have identified the swimmer as 22-year-old Christopher Milfort from Hawaii.

For the rest of Friday until dark fell, rescuers searched the area.

At daybreak on Saturday, Indian River County Fire Rescue crews began the search again, using four-wheelers to comb the beach and shoreline. Meanwhile, a red flag flew, warning beachgoers of the potential danger of the rough surf and potential rip tides.

As it got dark Saturday, the fire rescue called off the search, while the U.S. Coast Guard continued looking off shore.

As of Sunday, the Coast Guard and the fire rescue went into recovery mode. The body had not yet been found at the time this went to press.
