Lucy Haddock of Cocoa Beach holds Doug, an 8-month-old boxer-mix she has adopted, along with Abbey Compton, 12, Saturday, June 1. Ms. Haddock is one of the teachers at Freedom 7 Elementary that works on the Canine Commandos program. The commandos work with dogs in local shelters to help socialize the animals. Doug was adopted at the 'Rescue Me' event held at Viera Regional Park. Six local animal welfare groups including the Central Brevard Humane Society, Brevard Animal Services and the SPCA were involved.
