It's hurricane season and American Red Cross Mid-Florida Region responds to an average of three home fires per day -- both critical reasons for volunteers.
From students to seniors and from disaster services to office help, the Red Cross has a place for anyone who wants to donate their time and talent. The Red Cross provides training year round and has a shelter training day on Saturday, June 8.

DeLand library plans book sale June 7-8
The Friends of the Library will have its monthly used-book sale in the DeLand Regional Library auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Friday, June 7, and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8.
Hardbacks will be sold for $1 each, large paperbacks for 50 cents, and small paperbacks and magazines for 25 cents. Books will be sold for $3 a bag after 2 p.m. Saturday.
The DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave., is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Faith based weight loss program offered
An introduction for women of all ages to the First Place 4 Health program, a faith-based weight loss plan, is planned for 5 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Christ Community Church, 402 W. New York Ave., DeLand.
Meeting in weekly support groups, the members of Christ Community follow a 12- week curriculum that is centered around achieving balance in four essential areas of their lives: emotional, spiritual,
mental and physical.

Skate park fundraiser set at Café DaVinci
The Community Foundation of East Central Florida has created a fund for donations to build a Skate Park in Orange City to honor Colin Anderson.
Colin Anderson was killed crossing 17/92 in Orange City on Feb. 8. His mother Casandra Sprague and her family are intent on honoring Colin by building a skate park.
A silent auction and musical event fundraiser for the Colin M. Anderson Memorial Skate Park will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Café DaVinci, 112 W. Georgia Ave., DeLand.
Items for auction include two casino machines, dental exam and paintings.

Alzheimer's Association support group to meet
An Alzheimer's Association support group will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Canterbury House of St. Barnabas Church, West Wisconsin and Clara avenues, DeLand.

Kids can 'Dig into Reading' at the DeLand library this summer
Summer reading is "hot" at the DeLand Regional Library, which will offer reading and entertainment programs for children of all ages, from June 10 through July 26 at 130 E. Howry Ave.
"Dig into Reading" will include storytimes and Wigglecise for toddlers and preschoolers; weekly special events; and a reading program with prizes, weekly crafts, movies and a book club for children ages 5 to 12.

DeLand library offers summer reading program for adults
Adults can win prizes for reading books during the DeLand Regional Library's summer reading program, which starts June 10 at 130 E. Howry Ave.
The program's theme is "We have it all @ the DeLand Regional Library."
After reading or listening to five books of their choice between June 10 and July 23, patrons will earn a chance to win a Kindle Paperwhite e-reader or a $25 gift certificate to a local bookstore during two July prize drawings.
Participants can pick up reading logs with more details at any service desk beginning June 10.

Family housing units set to open in June; household items needed
The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia has been renovating a four-unit apartment home at 114 W. Walts Ave. in DeLand since late 2012 with the help of individual and business financial contributions, as well as free and reduced-cost work from more than a dozen local contractors.
Near move-in status, the four apartments are planned to open as emergency housing for homeless families with children in June.
Furniture and household goods are needed to make the renovated spaces livable. Neighborhood Center staff and volunteers are requesting donations of:
Bunk beds, twin beds, double beds and sofa beds
Sofas and armchairs
Kitchen tables and chairs
End tables, table lamps and floor lamps
Waste baskets and garbage pails
Dining room tables and chairs
Twin and double bed sheets, bed pillows and pillow cases
Bath, hand and dish towels
Blankets and spreads
Dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, cups/saucers, glasses and pots/pans
Table cloths, placemats and curtains
Plastic storage containers
Toasters and microwaves
To earmark donations for The Heart House, contact The Neighborhood Center's Thrift Shoppe at (386) 734-6006. Large items can be picked up. Surplus donations will be sold in the Thrift Shoppe to benefit The Neighborhood Center's programs.

Funds available for first-time homebuyers
First-time homebuyers who are mortgage-ready and meet income-eligibility and other program requirements, may qualify for Volusia County's Homebuyer Assistance Program.
The program provides a deferred payment, second mortgage loan of up to 20 percent of the purchase price plus up to $3,000 to assist with closing costs. If the homebuyer lives in the home for 15 years and complies with program restrictions, the loan will be forgiven.
The program is not available in the city limits of Daytona Beach, Deltona, Ponce Inlet and Port Orange.

Funds available to fortify homes against wind
Registration has begun for Volusia County's Wind Hazard Mitigation Program.
The grant-funded program can assist with hurricane coverings for window and doors, gable-end tie-downs and upgraded garage doors. The maximum award per household is $10,000.
Funding can be used only for owner-occupied homes in Volusia County except in the city limits of Daytona Beach, Deltona, Port Orange and Ponce Inlet. The funds are provided as a five-year, zero-interest, deferred loan secured by a mortgage. The owner is responsible to pay for closing costs. If the homeowner lives in the home for five years and complies with program restrictions, the loan will be forgiven.

Kiwanis Club elects officers
The DeLand Kiwanis Club has elected officers for the coming year, which starts in October.
Officers are Bob Anderson, president; Mick Rooney, president-elect; Mike Grebosz, past president; Tony Tussing, vice president; Garth Jenkins, secretary; Doug Speight, assistant; and Paul Morse, treasurer.
