BREVARD -- Pack your picnic basket with all of your favorite summertime snacks, and head to the Melbourne Auditorium.

On Tuesday, June 11 through Wednesday, June 12, the Melbourne Municipal Band will present its "Not-in-the-Park" picnic concerts. Pre-show entertainment by Robin and Eddie will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the concert beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free.

"Concert-goers have been voting for their favorite [songs] at our last three concerts," said Staci Cleveland, conductor. "We chose five music categories: march, overture, popular, Broadway and big band/swing."

Audience members were given a ballot for each music category, with each ballot listing four song choices. The winning songs will be played at the June program.

"The 'Crowd Favorites -- By Request' is new this year," Mrs. Cleveland said. "We always make it a point to keep in touch with our patrons and their likes and dislikes. Our program frequently includes a number or two we know the audience will recognize and appreciate."

By adding the "Crowd Favorites -- By Request," the band was able to learn the crowd's favorite songs directly from them, and believed that it would be a good way to incorporate the audience into the process of designing a concert.

The Melbourne Municipal Band has hosted the "Not-in-the-Park" picnic concerts for several summers.

"The idea for these came from necessity, as the MMB outside concerts were getting rained out," Mrs. Cleveland said. "The band wanted to continue the summer concert tradition, so the Melbourne Auditorium was set up with long picnic tables, and we moved indoors."

The popularity of the concert series has been huge since then, and Mrs. Cleveland said that the concerts are some of the most popular of the year.

In addition to a wonderful night of musical entertainment, there will also be a raffle, with prizes donated by Pineda Crossing, Island Pasta Company and the Henegar Center.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the American summer band concert tradition," Mrs. Cleveland said. "We encourage folks to pack a picnic dinner and bring a few friends and neighbors for an evening of great music and socialability."

The "Not-in-the-Park" concert is Tuesday, June 11 and Wednesday, June 12 at the Melbourne Auditorium. Preshow entertainment begins at 5:30 p.m., with the concert starting at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free.
