MELBOURNE -- Looking for fun, yet educational camps, for your children this summer?
The Melbourne Municipal Band, in conjunction with 4 the Kids of Brevard, is hosting its fifth annual Summer Youth Band Music Program from June 17 through July 11, which will run Monday through Thursday from 9-11 a.m.
The program is free, and is for students in grades sixth through 10th. Registration closes on May 31.
"One of the goals of the Melbourne Municipal Band is to promote and contribute to music education," said Art Martin, conductor of the MMB. "We launched the summer program to provide students in Brevard County with free musical instruction prior to the start of the new school year."
Designed to serve all children, the Summer Youth Band Music program is for those who might not have the resources to take music lessons, Mr. Martin added.
Free music instruction is provided to all students in the camp, regardless of experience level.
"The camp is for all levels, including beginners," Mr. Martin said. "We hope to spark a lifelong interest in playing an instrument and enjoyment of music."
One month's instrument rental fee and the cost of the lesson book are included for beginning students; however, parents or guardians are responsible for rental fees after the first month.
"The cost varies between music stores and the instrument the child chooses to play, and parents can find contact information for three music stores to help them get an idea of cost," Mr. Martin said.
At the conclusion of the camp, students will present a concert to parents and the public at 6 p.m. at the Melbourne Civic Auditorium.
"This camp is a great place to meet new friends and learn a skill that [students] can take with them their entire lives," Mr. Martin said. "Practicing and being a part of a group also provides lessons in discipline, teamwork and respect for others."
The free, fifth annual Summer Youth Band Music Program is June 17 through July 11, Monday through Thursday, from 9-11 a.m. The camp will be held at Church on the Rock, 4028 Babcock St., Melbourne.
The concert for parents and the public is July 11 at 6 p.m. at the Melbourne Civic Auditorium.
