STUART -- Each year, Keep Martin Beautiful hosts the Environmental Stewardship Awards as a way to recognize and reward efforts to promote innovative environmental stewardship within the community through education and action. This year, nominated for the first time, the GFWC Hobe Sound Women's Club Treasures from Trash project won the 2013 Environmental Stewardship Award in the Nonprofit and Civic Groups category.

Started two years ago, Treasures from Trash has been providing creative workshops at local libraries, schools and festivals. The goal of Treasures from Trash is to create an environmental partnership between business, industry and the community in Martin County by helping to establish a reusable resource center. Very simply, business and industry generate discards from outdated samples, overruns, rejects like foam, carpet, fabric and wallpaper samples, and more, which are generally destined for landfill.

Many of these discards however, can be used creatively by non-profits and schools for teaching purposes. By donating to a reusable resource center, business and industry can reduce disposal costs and may receive a charitable deduction. Our community schools and non-profits will have access to these inexpensive and sometimes unusual teaching supplies. Ultimately, business and industry become partners with the community, and to the benefit of the environment, our landfill is saved.

Being that Martin County is an environmentally conscious community, it should not be long before our county joins the 16 in Florida and the over 100 throughout the world. For more information about this project, go to www.gfwchobesoundwomensclub.org/
