MARTIN COUNTY -- Indian River State College dual-enrollment student, Mckenzie Merritt, received IRSC's 2013 Community Service Award for her exceptional community involvement, academic success, and leadership skills. She was also honored as one of Florida's best college students as a member of IRSC's All-Florida Academic Team.

Ms. Merritt will graduate with 129 college credits that she earned while a student at the Clark Advanced Learning Center, a national model charter high school on the IRSC Chastain Campus in Stuart. She will receive an Associate in Arts degree from Indian River State College, as well as a high school diploma in May. She plans to continue her education at Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at Florida Atlantic University majoring in medicine.

The Port Salerno resident volunteered at Martin Health Systems, South Health & Fitness Center, assisting personal trainers; Gertrude Walden Child Day Care, American Red Cross of Martin County, instructing and caring for young children, and Access Sports America, helping those with disabilities experience wind surfing and canoeing.

Ms. Merritt is also a member of the National Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges, and received Congressional Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in 2011. She is also a Clark student council representative and received a Girl Scouts Gold Award, Marine Corps League Auxiliary Good Citizenship award, Sheriffs Citizenship Youth and Heroism Award. In her spare time, Merritt enjoys digital media/graphic art, golfing, cross-country skiing and camping.

The Clark Advanced Learning Center has been ranked as the seventh best high school in the state by the Florida Department of Education. Clark students have an opportunity to complete one to two years of college at no cost through dual enrollment, engage in internships related to their interests, and utilize technology in project-based learning. A personal laptop computer is assigned to each student while in attendance at the school. An A-rated public charter high school, the Clark Advanced Learning Center is located at the Indian River State College Chastain Campus, 2400 S.E. Salerno Road in Stuart.
