Salvation Army seeking donations to stock pantry shelves

MARTIN COUNTY -- Every year, the Salvation Army of Martin County assists hundreds of needy families through its Emergency Food Assistance program. In fact, The Salvation Army distributed over 191,000 pounds of food in 2012.

However, as summer approaches, the Salvation Army is concerned about effectively meeting the needs of Martin County residents.

It is asking the community to help put food on their neighbors' tables by the immediate and continued support of monetary and canned soup and cereal donations for their food pantry.

"We have found that cereal and canned soups are among the most popular items for those in need," said Lieutenant Scott Hoover, corps officer and pastor for the Martin County Salvation Army. "Both are nutritious and easy for families to use, and if the cans are the pull-tab style, they can also be a staple for the homeless. We actually have a pretty good supply of canned meats, peanut butter and jelly at this time. However, we really like to fill our bags with additional supplies like canned soup and cereal, as well as pasta, pasta sauce, canned tomatoes, rice and beans."

Items urgently needed to restock the shelves are:

Cereals like cheerios, rice krispies and corn flakes, the more nutritious and less sugar-filled kind.

Canned soups like chicken noodle and/or vegetable beef.

Items always needed:

Canned tomatoes.

Pasta sauce.

Pasta (spaghetti, ziti).

Canned beans (black beans, kidney beans).

Donations of non-perishable foods can be delivered to 821 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Stuart, directly across from the Stuart police station. Financial donations are also accepted and if noted, will be used specifically for the food pantry.
