MELBOURNE -- Put away your umbrellas and slip on your dancing shoes.

On Friday, May 24, the Swingtime Jazz Band will host its annual "May Flowers Ball" at the Melbourne Auditorium, from 7-10 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

"The 'May Flowers Ball' is one of seven dances the Swingtime Jazz Band puts on each year," said Art Martin, conductor. "It was started many years ago, shortly after Swingtime was formed, around 1990."

Mr. Martin insists that those who attend don't need to be great dancers in order to enjoy a night filled with great music.

"We play different styles of music, with different beats, and anyone who enjoys dancing or just likes listening to the band is more than welcome to come," Mr. Martin added.

Attendees will hear a wide variety of music, including "In the Mood," "Mack the Knife," "Satin Doll," "Never on Sunday" and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You."

The Swingtime Jazz Band will also be accompanied by local vocalists Sally Hart and Len Fallen.

Prior to the "May Flowers Ball," those looking to brush up on their Fox Trot can arrive at the Melbourne Auditorium at 6 p.m. for dance lessons. Lessons will be provided by Laura Beers, and will be $5.

"We love to host the dances to provide a social event for people, who like to dance to live, Big Band music," Mr. Martin said. "It's a great outlet to meet friends, enjoy one another's company and dance the night away to some of the best music played by a 20-piece Big Band in the area."

The "May Flowers Ball," hosted by the Swingtime Jazz Band, is Friday, May 24 at the Melbourne Auditorium from 7-10 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
