Renee Foosaner Education Center to host camp from June 4 to July 26

By Chris Fish

BREVARD -- For more than 20 years, the Renee Foosaner Education Center has provided an outlet of expression for Brevard County students.

From June 4 to July 26, the education center will host this summer's "Have Art, Will Travel," camp.

"The Foosaner Education Center provides the perfect setting for art exploration," said Sara Petrosky, curator of education for the Renee Foosaner Education Center. "The museum is the epicenter of the fine arts movement in Brevard, and, if your child is interested in art, world culture or simply likes having fun, this is the place to be.

This summer, Ms. Petrosky said the center will offer four-day sessions, Tuesday through Friday. Campers can choose between attending a half-day experience in morning from 9 a.m. to noon, in the afternoon from 1- 4 p.m. or an all-day experience.

Each week, campers will explore the concepts and techniques of art, discover the various ways to use them and create individual masterpieces and collaborative group projects.

Ms. Petrosky said the summer camp provides a feeling of nostalgia for campers.

"I once attended as a fourth grader," she said. "I am sure many other Brevard residents remember the building, which used to house the Science Center back in the day. The nostalgia is intoxicating for some who walk through the doors."

The program will culminate with a gallery-quality student art show, Ms. Petrosky said. This will give students an opportunity to share their work with friends, family and the community.

The center has also undergone a recent renovation, which has made room for more classroom space, a brand new entrance and front desk, a student lounge and gallery-quality exhibition space, Ms. Petrosky said.

"As the new curator of education, I am committed to providing outside-of-the-box, quality children's classes," she said. "The benefits of art education for children are multifaceted."

Organizers said campers are grouped according to age: 3 to 5 years; first to second-graders; third to fourth-graders; and fifth to sixth-graders.

"Have Art, Will Travel" will be at the Renee Foosaner Education Center located at 1463 Highland Ave., Melbourne.
