SUNTREE -- After spending 22 years in the garbage-recycling business, J.P. McMenamy, along with his wife, Teresa, is determined to provide high-end furniture for low-end prices.
"I was in garbage and recycling for 22 years, and then I retired," said Mr. McMenamy, co-owner of McM Fine Furniture Warehouse. "My house was then destroyed by a hurricane, so I got into real estate. We would buy furniture for the homes we would sell, and then we would sell the furniture. When the real estate market collapsed, people still kept buying the furniture."
Since opening in August, McM Fine Furniture Warehouse provides the world's top furniture manufacturers, such as Henredon, Maitland-Smith, Habersham and Ralph Lauren, for a discounted price, after buying overrun, discontinued and overstocked items from manufacturers.
"We have a $9,000 bed by Carol Bolton for $1,500," Mr. McMenamy said. "We had the raw frames all done and carved, but it still needed to be finished, so we hired the same finisher, who works in the factory, to do it. He did the same job he would do it at work, and we cut the price by $8,500."
Mr. McMenamy said the warehouse, which is filled with various items, ranging from desks and chests to chairs and dining tables, is a simple presentation in order to provide the lowest-costing merchandise to the customer.
"Every penny I spend on sprucing this place up has to go to the furniture," he said. "We want to keep the items as low as possible. An electric bill alone in a show room is as high as my rent. That's why their products are always so expensive."
In fact, the prices at McM Fine Furniture Warehouse are so low they attract other furniture company owners.
"I always get a kick out of when managers and employees of furniture stores come here and buy their own furniture," he said. "They know they are getting such great deals."
McM Fine Furniture Warehouse is located at 3280 Suntree Blvd. in Melbourne, and is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
