For Hometown News

Recently, both Jack Aldendefer and his daughter, Judy, of Port Orange were honored for their service to their country by Halifax Health-Hospice of Volusia County.

They each were presented with a medal and plaque and songs representing the Corp in which they served, as well as prayer shawls, which were created by the ladies from Hospice.

Mr. Aldendefer was born Nov. 7, 1913, and married his wife Arlene in 1942. That same year he was drafted into what was then the Army Air Force. After training schools in Miami, Colorado and Nebraska, he was sent to Guam with the 16th Bomb Group. The 16th was part of the 315th Bomb Wing, a vanguard in the effort of strategic bombing by radar.

His department was responsible for supplying air squadrons for flying sorties to Japan. He remembers Guam as being OK except when it rained, because then all the geckos came out and you couldn't walk without stepping on them. He was discharged Christmas Day 1945 {the biggest Christmas present ever}. He returned to Pennsylvania where he and Arlene raised four children: Mike, David, Judy [retired U.S. Navy Nurse] and Rita.
