Party with the dogs
The Timucuan Weimaraner Club of Florida presents the first ever Cinco de Weimo Party, a fundraiser for dog rescue, from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at The Elusive Grade, 133 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.

Music will be provided by Pete & Jason, and there will be a silent auction.
All proceeds go to Weimaraner rescue.
Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church will host Pet-A-Palooza from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at 509 E. Pennsylvania Ave., DeLand.
There will be a silly-dog show with prizes for fluffiest dog and craziest dog costume. The Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens will bring some interesting animals, and there will be vendors and displays by local vets, pet shelters and pet-supply stores, along with activities for children.
Proceeds will benefit The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia Heart House.
Quit smoking program offered
The Northeast Florida Area Health Education Center is offering a free six-week "Quit Smoking Now" Program in Volusia County.
Classes meet once a week for 60 to 90 minutes and are conducted by a trained facilitator.
Participants receive a workbook, educational tools, a Quit Kit, and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patches, lozenges, or gum).
The program is free of cost and has helped many clients quit their smoking or tobacco use successfully.

Tryouts scheduled for Junior Lifeguard Program
Youths between 9 and 15 may try out for the Junior Lifeguard Program beginning Saturday, May 4.
The program, led by professional lifeguards, offers youths between 9 and 15 a chance to learn about water safety and first-aid techniques during weeklong camps in June and July. Junior lifeguards also participate in daily team relays involving surfboard paddling, swimming, running and beach flags.
To qualify, junior lifeguards must be able to swim 100 yards within two minutes and 15 seconds, tread water for five minutes, and swim under water 10 feet.
Candidates must pass a physical skills test, which will be offered at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at the DeLand YMCA, 761 International Speedway Blvd.
Candidates may register online at volusia.org/beach after passing the physical skills test. Tuition is due at registration. The cost for a one-week camp is $150. Youths may enroll in one additional week for $125.
Camps will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday at these locations:

Law firm collecting books for pediatrics center
Politis & Matovina, P.A. will be collecting new children's books to donate to Halifax Health-Betty Jane France Center for Pediatrics.
The law firm's offices at 730 Dunlawton Ave., Port Orange, 170 E. Granada Blvd., Suite A, Ormond Beach, and 2730 Enterprise Road, Suite C, Orange City, will be drop off sites from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
The book drive is focused on helping raise awareness of congenital heart defects in children. It is in honor of Tressel Lincoln Scott Meinardi.
DeLand library plans book sale May 10 - 11
The Friends of the Library will have its monthly used-book sale in the DeLand Regional Library auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Friday, May 10; and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11.
Hardbacks will be sold for $1 each, large paperbacks for 50 cents, and small paperbacks and magazines for 25 cents. Books will be sold for $3 a bag after 2 p.m. Saturday.
Patrons can buy books at pre-sale prices from 2:30 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday, May 9.
The DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave., is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Volusia County's Pet Vet Cruiser offers low-cost spaying and neutering services to cats and dogs that belong to residents of unincorporated areas and the cities of DeLand and South Daytona.
Here's where the mobile clinic will be in May:
Oakbrook Professional Center, 931 S. Spring Garden Ave., DeLand: May 2, 7, 14, 16, 21, 28 and 30
Fancy Fruit and Produce, 911 S. Volusia Ave., Orange City: May 6, 13 and 20

Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous can help those who suffer from food obsession, overeating, undereating and bulimia.
FA is based upon the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.
