MARTIN COUNTY -- Martin County resident Betty Mulligan was named Florida's Region III Outstanding Senior Volunteer of the Year for 2013.
Also named the District's Outstanding Senior Volunteer of the Year, Ms. Mulligan has volunteered at J.D. Parker School of Science, Math and Technology for the past six years and has accumulated approximately 2,000 volunteer hours.
"Betty Mulligan is one of the most dedicated volunteers I have seen," said Mary White, Principal of J.D. Parker School of Science, Math and Technology. "Betty understands the value of a student-adult connection and then makes it academic so the child can succeed. She uses her extensive training to help many students in Martin County."
Ms. Mulligan used her skills as a retired reading specialist to initiate and implement a literacy tutoring program at JDP for which she recruited and supervises 50 volunteer tutors for students in kindergarten through 5th grade.
"We are incredibly proud that Ms. Mulligan has been selected by the state for this honor. She dedicates her time and energy to providing additional support for our students to ensure their success. She gives from the heart each day and is a true asset to the school and our District," said Superintendent Laurie J. Gaylord.
Ms. Mulligan will be recognized for this achievement during the District's Outstanding Volunteer, Mentors, and Business Partners Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, April 24. The ceremony takes place in the Stuart Middle School cafeteria and begins at 6:30 p.m.
Region III includes the following school districts: Martin County, St. Lucie County, Indian River County, Brevard County, Osceola County, Orange County and Lake County.
