Staff report

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY -- A short fight between two inmates proved fatal last week, law enforcement officials said.

Vincent Laurie, 42, was involved in a physical altercation with Thomas Solomon, 27, in the common area of a cell at the Indian River County Jail on April 3 and was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, where he died.

The case is still under investigation and updates may be forthcoming, said Jeff Luther, director of governmental affairs and media relations.

The cause of death is still undetermined pending the outcome of the autopsy by the medical examiner's office, a press release said.

According to the original press release, Mr. Laurie became physical toward Mr. Solomon. Mr. Solomon hit Mr. Laurie in the head and Mr. Laurie fell to the floor and did not get up. The altercation lasted less than five seconds and no weapons were involved.
