BREVARD -- Cancer. The word alone strikes a crippling fear into the hearts and minds of those who have experienced its ravaging effects.
While the disease literally deflates those it plagues, a local organization has become a "Superman" of sorts, offering solace in a time of need.
On Saturday, April 20, the Cancer Care Centers Foundation will host its 11th annual Caring Hearts Benefit at the home of Ed and Jeanne Andre of Indialantic, from 5-8 p.m.
"The purpose of the Cancer Care Centers Foundation is to assist local cancer patients, undergoing treatments financially by paying for their basic living expenses, pain and cancer-related medications, so that they may place all their efforts in getting well by alleviating some of the stress associated with a cancer diagnosis," said Marta Fiol, marketing manager for Cancer Care Centers of Brevard and secretary for the CCCF.
As the patient-load of the CCCF increased, Ms. Fiol said it became self-evident that the foundation needed a signature event that would raise enough money in order to never turn anyone away.
Through former board member, Gary Wynberg, the Caring Hearts Benefit was created.
"The first two years, the event was held at different locations," Ms. Fiol said. "Talk about a blessing -- over the last nine years, the Andres have graciously offered their stunning home and host the event."
With delicious delicacies and treats offered by a range of culinary masters, guests can wine and dine, as they enjoy various musical acts.
"To welcome the guests, they will be greeted by guitarist Arturo Echarte of Acoustic for a Change," Ms. Fiol added. "Guitarist, Don Soledad with his upbeat Flamenco music, along with upright bass and percussion, sets the tone for an unforgettable evening."
Both a live and silent auction will be held at the 11th annual Caring Hearts Benefit, where attendees can bid for exotic trips, jewelry, art and gift certificates to area restaurants.
Jessica Andre of Melbourne, who is co-hosting the event alongside her parents, said she is looking forward to spending the evening with people who care so much about helping others in need throughout the community.
"It's such a great event because all of the money raised goes to help people who live right here in our community," she said. "It's always a fun event with great food and music at a beautiful venue."
Though extremely grateful for the many sponsors that allow the Cancer Care Centers Foundation to help many patients each year, the Caring Hearts Benefit is the foundation's prize event.
"Other than it is one of the most beautiful, tropical settings in Brevard, you will be surrounded by the wonderful people whose mission is to help those suffering from cancer, alleviating their road a bit by keeping their homes and basic living expense at bay," Ms. Fiol said.
The 11th annual Caring Hearts Benefit is Saturday, April 20 from 5-8 p.m. at the home of Ed and Jeanne Andre.
The Andres home is located at 3800 N. Riverside Dr., Indialantic.
The cost to attend is $125 per person, and proceeds benefit cancer patients in Brevard and Indian River counties.
Those interested in attending, or wishing to donate, should contact Marta Fiol at firstname.lastname@example.org or at (321) 426-5145.
Checks can also be mailed to Cancer Care Foundation/Caring Hearts at 1430 S. Pine St., Melbourne, 32901.
