ST. LUCIE COUNTY -- St. Lucie County licensed teen drivers can improve their defensive driving skills by taking the "Teen Driver Challenge" on April 11 and 13.

"The Sheriffs of Florida developed the Teen Driver Challenge program because the number one killer of American teen-agers is car crashes," said Sheriff Ken J. Mascara. "This program is good for teen drivers and for the public at large."

The course will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, with a classroom session at the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, located at 4700 W. Midway Road, Fort Pierce, and a hands-on driving session from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the police academy driving course on Kirby Loop Road.

Classes are free, but space is limited. Registration forms found on the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office website or obtained at the main office located at 4700 West Midway Road in Fort Pierce, and must be completed and turned into the Sheriff's Office by April. There is no registration by phone.

Details are available on the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office website at this web page address:

Return completed forms to: Training Unit, St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, 4700 W. Midway Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34981 or fax to: (772) 462-3615. If you fax your registration, have teen bring the original when he/she comes to the first class.

Information is also available by calling the Training Unit at (772) 462-3604.
