Anything can happen in the 'woods'
The Melbourne Civic Theatre presents "Into the Woods," with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, produced by special arrangement with Music Theater International.
The Brothers Grimm hit Broadway with an epic fairytale where worlds collide. James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece and rare modern classic.
The story follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk.
When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse.
Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
One of Sondheim's most popular works, "Into the Woods" is a musically sophisticated show.
The musical will run through Sunday, April 28, every Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Casting for "Into the Woods" includes Randy Caldwell (Narrator), Leslie Hayford (Cinderella), Daniel Grest (Jack), Donna Furfaro (Jack's Mother), Dana Blanchard (Baker), Vanessa Munns-Quigley (Baker's Wife), Pam Quenzler (Cinderella's Stepmother), Becky Behl-Hill and Emily Pickens (Cinderella's Step-Sisters) Tori Terhune (Little Red Ridinghood), Brenda Sheets (Witch), Tracey Thompson (Cinderella's Mother), Randy Caldwell (Mysterious Man), Bryce Niehaus (Wolf), Tracey Thompson (Granny), Evita Clowney (Rapunzel), Chris Rye (Rapunzel's Prince), Bryce Niehaus (Cinderella's Prince),David Diaz (Steward), Deanna Dickman (Snow White) and Pamela J. Bell (Sleeping Beauty).
Artistic Director Peg Girard said, "Although children (8 and older) are certain to love this show because of its recognizable characters and the colorful scenery and costumes, adults will find it to be a tale about community responsibility and parents and the legacy they pass on. Obviously, it's a great show that will appeal to everyone on different levels."
The production is being directed by Peg Girard, with musical direction by John Kurowski. Holly McFarland serves as choreographer. Technical Direction is by Alan Selby, and lighting design for "Into the Woods" is by Alan Selby and Scott Sutherland. Resident Costumer Alice Henning provides the costume design, with the wolf costume by Eldona Mellen. Set Design is by Gary Postlethwait.
