The Port Orange Regional Library will conduct a book sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 5, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at 1005 City Center Circle.

Spaghetti dinner slated

Low cost pet clinic planned
There will be two lower cost pet shot clinics, sponsored by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, on Saturday, April 6.
The clinics will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Best In Show Pet Grooming, 201 Commonwealth Blvd., Port Orange, and from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Mr. Petman, 2400 S. Ridgewood Ave., South Daytona, at Sunshine Park Mall.

Golf tournament planned
The Port Orange Lions Club will host its third annual golf tournament at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 7, at Crane Lakes Golf & Country Club. The fee is $75 and includes greens fee, cart, breakfast and barbecue lunch.

Northeast Volusia Democrats to meet
The regular monthly meeting of the Northeast Volusia County Democratic Club will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the private dining room of the Piccadilly Cafeteria in Volusia Mall, 1700 W International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach.
Guest speakers representing the Healthy Start Coalition will discuss the Affordable Care Act. The coalition is a professional group dedicated to supporting an interactive service system for women and families in their outreach area.

Learn to tango
The Greater Daytona Chapter USA Dance No. 6026 will conduct beginning American Tango Lessons
April 16, 23 and 30.
Class will be from 7 to 8 p.m. at Lighthouse Pointe Clubhouse, 155 Spring Drive, Port Orange,
Cost is $6 per person per lesson. Total is $18 per person, non-refundable, payable in full at the first of the three lessons.

Audubon Society to host field trips
The Halifax River Audubon Society will host a free field trip under the Dunlawton Bridge at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in Port Orange. No walking required.

There will be a field trip to Wekiva Springs State Park in Apopka on April 12.
Participants should meet at 7 a.m. at International Square Shopping Center parking lot near the Krystal on West International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach to form carpools. Port Orange Police Department awarded accreditation
First accredited in 2004, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies recently awarded the Port Orange Police Department "Accreditation with Excellence."
The accreditation marks the fourth consecutive time the Port Orange Police Department has received the recognition. In 2010, the police department was awarded and designated by the commission as a Flagship Law Enforcement Agency.
In addition to meeting the commission's standards beyond compliance, agencies must meet certain strict criteria, including a minimum of two previous consecutive accreditation awards and not having issues involving life, safety and security standards.
Also, the Port Orange Police Department has been a Florida accredited agency since 1997.

Library to host e-reader classes
Are you stuck in the '70s? Join the 21st century with a series of free computer and e-reader classes at the Port Orange Regional Library in April.
Upcoming classes include:
Kindle class: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, April 8. Bring your Kindle and learn how to download library e-books, audio books and music.
Social networking websites: 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11. Get an overview of popular networking sites, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Shelfari and more.
Introduction to computers and the Internet: 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 16. Become familiar with terminology, practice using the keyboard and mouse, and learn how to navigate the web and the Windows operating system.

Participants are asked to bring fully charged laptops and e-readers and cables. The library has free Wi-Fi throughout the building.

Dr. Evelyn Bethune to speak at Port Orange library April 12
Dr. Evelyn Bethune will discuss the life and times of her grandmother, Mary McLeod Bethune, during a free presentation at 2 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle.
Dr. Bethune is the chief executive officer of the Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Preservation Institute, which was founded in 2002 to ensure the continuation, growth and development of Mary McLeod Bethune's legacy of promoting education and community service.
Her presentation is part of Viva Florida 500, a year-long, statewide grassroots effort to recognize Ponce de Leon's exploration of Florida in 1513 and celebrate the state's rich heritage and diverse cultural history.

Contributions sought for 'treasure sale'
South Daytona Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting applications for its Community Treasure Sale, which features garage/yard sale items, arts, crafts, and authors.
Each 12 by 12 space is $15. Applications may be picked-up at the Piggotte Community Center, 504 Big Tree Road, South Daytona.
This is one of the area's largest outdoor events of its kind.
There will also be a DJ, petting zoo and other children's activities to help attract large crowds.
The sale will be Saturday, April 27, at Reed Canal Park, 919 Reed Canal Road.
Registration in advance is required. There is no fee for shoppers to attend and browse.
