John Carroll High School was proud to compete in the Indian River State College Math Competition this month.
The JCHS students placed second out of 16 area teams, and student Stephen Chen earned third place for the individual test competition.
Congratulations to Stephen Chen, Kevin Zhang, Crystal Hong, and Allison Ma, who answered ten rounds of questions which were judged on correct answers and the speed in which students completed the math problems. Congratulations to the additional competitors Thomas Ageeb, Sara Charles, Carly Jones, Katie Lescouflair, Jack McGarry, Cameron Roberts, Ben Worley and Charlie Yang.
"I was very pleased to see how well the students worked together during the team competition and were yielding to the input and explanation of others," said Linda Ageeb, math teacher and competition sponsor. "These are great skills that will support them in the job force: working together, explaining their methodology, and problem solving, as well as the cooperative attitude they displayed working with one another."
This is the third IRSC competition in which JCHS has participated, with the only preparation for the competition coming from individuals working outside of the classroom.
John Carroll High School is proud to initiate a revival of its Mu Alpha Theta club on campus. This math honor society includes students with strong math interests and backgrounds. They have the opportunity to excel in several different competitions.
